SMS v3 Pro – Creating Items

This guide will cover the basics of creating a new item with the very minimum information:

  1. UPC/PLU
  2. Description
  3. Sub-Department
  4. Follow S-Dept
  5. Price

  1. Log into SMSPro using either ‘Log>Login’ or F3. Enter your operator code and passcode if applicable
  2. Click ‘Maintenance’ in the top ribbon.
  3. In the Preferred Maintenance panel, select ‘Item maintenance [Price only]’

More information on the Price and cost panels is covered in the Cost Record Management document.

  4. The basic item tables will appear:

    - The Filter table is where you would enter a PLU/UPC number to begin the creation process.
    - The Main item table has the fields that can be used to group different items together for reporting, etc. The ‘Descriptor’ field is required in this table.
    - The POS table has many usable parameters for customization. An easy way to fill the POS description is to double click and it will copy the Descriptor from the Main table right in. Double click in the S-Dept to open the Sub-Department list window to select the Sub-Department the item will reside in. Provided that the Sub-Department is programmed appropriately for the new item, filling the Follow S-Dept checkbox will provide most facets (taxable, Food stamp, etc.) as inherited rather than setting these on every item.
    - The minimum information needed in the Price table is the Reg Price that is the everyday standard item price. Note: the price fields assume 2 decimal places, if no decimal is used. 55 = 0.55; 100 = 1.00. Both 1000 and 10.00 can be entered for $10. Use whichever method you are comfortable with.

  5. When you enter a UPC/PLU that doesn’t exist in the system, you will receive an ‘Add UPC’ pop-up.

The majority of the time, especially if the tables are blank as seen above, choose ‘Blank all tables’ to start with a new, clean item record.

  6. Fill in the fields mentioned above.
  7. Use the  ‘Save changes’ button to commit the record to the server database.
  8. To send the changes to the lanes, use Preference>Deploy changes.
